GAME OF THRONES: FIRST OF HIS NAME (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic fantasy series, based on the book series by George R.R. Martin, about the warring royal families of Westeros.

In this episode, Tommen is officially crowned king, and Cersei admits to Margaery that Joffrey would have been a "nightmare" as a monarch and a husband. Unsure "what comes next," they agree to discuss the tenuous Lannister-Tyrell alliance with their respective fathers. In Meereen, Daenerys is surprised to hear of Joffrey's murder, and she considers taking advantage of the turmoil to invade King's Landing. Learning that Yunkai and Astapor have slid back toward slavery in her absence, however, she resolves to delay her attack on the Lannisters to fulfill her duty as "breaker of chains." Sansa and Baelish arrive at the Eyrie, where Sansa meets her Aunt Lysa and odd young cousin Robin, who notes that his father was also slain by the Lannisters. Lysa begs Petyr to marry her that very day, revealing that she, in fact, poisoned her husband Jon on Petyr's instructions. Sansa uncomfortably overhears their noisy wedding night.

Tywin declares that Tommen and Margaery will be wed – as will Cersei and Loras – after a brief mourning period. He reveals that they are in "tremendous" debt to the Iron Bank of Braavos, as their gold mines have long since run dry, and therefore desperately need the Tyrells' financial assistance. Cersei, however, is more concerned with Tyrion's trial and presumable execution for Joffrey's death. Out on the road, Arya obsesses over her "kill list" – which includes the Hound himself – and he scorns her "water-dancing" fighting techniques, as taught to her by the late swordmaster Syrio Forel. At the Eyrie, Sansa is shocked when her aunt reveals her fierce jealousy over Petyr's lifelong love for her sister Catelyn, and for Sansa herself, demanding to know if she has been intimate with her "uncle." When Sansa frantically protests, Lysa assures her that she will be wed to Robin once Tyrion is dead.

Brienne grows exasperated with Podrick's helplessness as her squire, though she is surprised to learn that he killed a man to save Tyrion's life during the Battle of the Blackwater. Cersei visits Oberyn, noting that they were both unable to save a loved one from death; she seems unconvinced by his assurances that Myrcella is safe and happy in Dorne. Held captive outside Craster's Keep, Jojen assures Bran that "this isn't the end," as they have both seen the future. Locke reports to the Night's Watch that they can easily best the eleven drunken men holding Craster's wives and daughters captive. When Karl Tanner attempts to assault Meera, Jojen informs him that he is destined to die that night. As the Crows launch their attack, Bran wargs into Hodor and kills Locke. Though Bran is desperate to reconnect with his half-brother, Jojen reminds him of his mission to find the three-eyed raven. Bran reluctantly departs with Hodor and the Reeds. Jon, unaware of Bran's presence, kills Karl with the help of one of Craster's daughters. When Rast attempts to escape, he is slaughtered by Ghost, who then reunites with a delighted Jon. With all of the traitors dead, Jon invites Craster's women to seek shelter from Mance Rayder's army – "and worse" – at Castle Black. However, the women resolve to go their own way, burning down the hateful Craster's home as they go.
