ALL IN THE FAMILY: THE HOT WATCH (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about a working-class household presided over by the opinionated Archie Bunker. In this episode, Edith explains Archie's picky eating habits to Michael as she prepares dinner. Archie arrives home and proudly shows off his new wristwatch that he got "off of a friend," displaying its many features and timing Edith's dinner preparations. When he mentions that it is worth $300 but only cost him $25, however, the family becomes suspicious, with Michael guessing that the watch is stolen. Archie dismisses the idea, though admits that the "friend" who sold it to him has a criminal past and gets into a disagreement with Michael over race, as usual. They point out that he could get into trouble if the police have the serial number of the stolen watch, and when it stops working, they caution him against taking it to a jeweler. Archie makes some phone calls and attempts to track down an unscrupulous repairman, and when Lionel stops by, he asks him for some "expert" advice on handling the hot item. Lionel is not fooled, and Archie is horrified when he learns that Edith took the watch to Mr. Abrams, a legitimate jeweler, and fears that he will now be caught. Mr. Abrams soon arrives, and Archie swears his ignorance of its origins, but Mr. Abrams informs him that it is not stolen, but is in fact a fake, worth far less than Archie paid for it in the first place. The family descends into an argument about Archie's relative net loss in the purchase, but Edith is more interested in the fascinating subject of time zones. Includes commercials.
