ABC MOVIE SPECIAL: MACGYVER: TRAIL TO DOOMSDAY (TV)

Summary

This made-for-television film presents the further adventures of MacGyver, a former Special Forces agent known for his inventive survival skills. The film aired after the completion of the popular action/adventure series of the same name. As the movie opens, the lavish birthday party of MacGyver's friend Paul Moran comes under attack by unidentified terrorists; Paul is shot and killed. MacGyver gives Paul's friend Natalia a ride home after the party, and they discover that someone has broken into her apartment. She assumes that the burglars were from the group that ravaged the party, and she speculates about who may be behind it all -- also admitting that she is a former KGB agent. She agrees to introduce MacGyver to one of her contacts, Nikolai, who arranges a meeting between MacGyver and members of the group behind Paul's death. After earning the trust of the leader, Joseph, MacGyver is ready for his first assignment. Joseph soon turns up dead, however. MacGyver visits the terrorists' meeting place and finds papers revealing that Paul was indeed the target of the attack. After narrowly escaping armed pursuers, MacGyver deduces that the hit on Paul may have had something to do with Paul's scientific research. With Paul's friend Tony Graves he and Natalia visit Paul's lab, which has also been burglarized. Soon MacGyver realizes that Paul was a target because his new invention detected the presence of weapons-grade uranium nearby. A chain of events heightens the intensity of the investigation: MacGyver narrowly escapes being blown up in his car; Graves turns up dead; and Natalia's loyalty comes into question. Eventually, MacGyver makes his way to Carcroft Castle, where he uncovers the truth about those who plotted Paul's death -- and struggles to save the world with seconds to spare. Includes commercials, promos, and a public-service announcement. This program is closed-captioned.
