Summary
The pilot and premiere of this series of dramas about five siblings in San Francisco who attempt to raise themselves and cope with life's daily dilemmas after their parents die in a car accident. In this episode, set six months after the loss of their parents, the Salinger siblings reach a crisis in managing life on their own: Owen's nanny quits and Bailey must quickly find a qualified replacement or risk breaking an agreement with Social Services; Charlie loses $12,000 -- an entire four-month disbursement of the family's trust allowance -- in a real estate investment; and unpaid bills continue to mount, while the kitchen plumbing fails. A chastened Charlie resolves to spend more time living at home and supervising his younger siblings, but meets with hostility from Bailey and Julia, who are furious with him for abusing his control of their allowance. Meanwhile, Julia is devastated when she is dumped by a boy for whom she has strong feelings, and Claudia pawns her violin, both to help pay the bills and to relieve herself of the pressure of being a prodigy. Later, a beautiful young nanny named Kirsten turns up at the Salinger doorstep for an interview; and, Charlie takes an important step toward assuming his part of the responsibility for his family's well-being.
