HUGHLEYS, THE: DOG EAT DOG (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about the Hughleys, a black family that moves to the white suburbs. In this episode, Darryl is upset when Sydney and Michael bring home a stray dog. Darryl lets his kids keep the dog, named Jed, while they half-heartedly attempt to find its rightful owner. Then, Dave and Sally arrive, discussing Mr. Ballard, the new neighbor that has been annoying everyone with a collection of nude statues on his lawn. Darryl and the other neighbors go over to Mr. Ballard to try and convince him to remove some of the statues, which he refuses to do. The next day, Jed escapes and Mr. Ballard later claims to have been attacked by him. Mr. Ballard tells Darryl he is going to take him to court. Soon, Darryl is in court facing off against Mr. Ballard, who arrives there in a neckbrace and wheelchair. Surprisingly, Mr. Ballard has hired Johnnie Cochran as his lawyer, impressing the judge as well as most of Darryl's witnesses. Not surprisingly, it looks like Darryl is about to lose the case. That evening, Darryl blames Jed for all his problems, not wanting to lose the case and thus upset his children. The next day, Darryl puts Mr. Ballard on the stand before showing pictures of the "lewd and lascivious" statues to the jury. He then makes an impassioned plea and offers to have the neighbors "reach out" to lonely Mr. Ballard if he removes the statues. When Mr. Ballard agrees, Darryl asks for a dismissal of the case, which is granted. He then receives congratulations from Johnnie. Finally, the kids find Jed's real owner, at which point Darryl tries -- and miserably fails -- to find a substitute pet. Includes commercials and the first minute of the program which follows, "Spin City."
