Summary
The premiere of this series of live, late-night comedy/variety programs featuring topical satire. Highlights include the following: guest host George Carlin performs monologues and introduces the guests; Janis Ian sings "At Seventeen" and "In the Winter"; Billy Preston sings "Nothing from Nothing" and "Fancy Lady"; Chevy Chase appears in a "Weekend Update" sketch; Jim Henson's Muppets are featured in a sketch about prehistoric monsters; the short film "The Impossible Truth," written and directed by Albert Brooks, features Brooks in a satire of news coverage of "astounding" events; comedienne Valri Bromfield performs a stand-up teacher/student routine; and comedian Andy Kaufman lip-syncs to the theme song of "Mighty Mouse." Sketches include an English teacher (Michael O'Donoghue) giving an unusual lesson to a foreign student (John Belushi); a courtroom sketch with Jane Curtin; "Victims of Shark Bite" with Curtin and Belushi; an episode of "Bee Hospital"; a simulated assault and burglary on an unsuspecting couple (Belushi and Gilda Radner) in an attempt to sell the "Trojan Horse" home security system; a sidewalk campaign called "Show Us Your Guns"; and commercial parodies for "New Dad" family insurance, "Jamitol," "Triple-track" razors, and a technical school for stand-by telephone operators.
